Cross-factional guilds in World of Warcraft are something of an unfulfilled dream for many players of the venerable MMORPG. It’s not uncommon to find a new friend playing WoW, only to find out he’s vacationing in Orgrimmar while you’re hanging out in Stormwind.
Shadowlands has gone to great lengths to address this issue by adding cross-faction groups, allowing sworn enemies to team up for PvE content. Unfortunately, this has limitations and does not work in guild or raid dungeons/finders. Fortunately for those who want to give Peacecraft a try, Blizzard is working on it, according to WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas.
“That’s what we want to do,” the WoW developer said in an interview with Twitch streamer Maximum. “I’d like to see us do this before the next expansion, but it depends on fixing a lot of engineering issues.”
The introduction of faction grouping in WoW is still riddled with bugs, so it’s no surprise that guilds are a glitch. Groups have sometimes found that group/raid chats and whispers are not reaching members of different groups. Hazzikostas adds, “These changes push code and systems that have been designed to work a certain way for 20 years,” but the introduction of interaction guilds “might be easier than expected, we’ll see.”
However, there are concerns about the full openness of communication between the factions. Ion explains that “we want to make sure there’s some sort of signature connection and not just a whisper from a random person from different factions attacking you.” At least for WoW fans, this is good news. Coupled with the ability to limit pre-made group hunting parties to a single faction, at least people who want to keep Warfare in Warcraft will be able to ignore the changes entirely.
In the full interview, Ion also talks about the state of Season 4, concurrent difficulty sorties, and the idea of ”mandatory” courses for raids, and you can watch it on Maximum’s Twitch channel.
