In Ixion, a story-driven space city builder, you travel the stars in search of a new home for humanity. Traveling aboard the giant space station Tiqqun, you must manage your resources and supplies by scouting planets for viability, extracting resources from nearby systems, and trying to keep your crew happy due to power and food shortages. At Gamescom, producer Christian Woolford spoke with PCGamesN about some of the post-launch features the team hopes to add to Ixion.
“Photo mode is what we need,” says Wolford, “it will definitely be a post-launch update and not DLC, but we want to make sure the game has filters and angles and everything. So it’s absolutely true.” With the stunning look of space in Ixion and the detailed architecture both inside and outside of your space station, players will love the opportunity to take some artistic photos of their creations.
Wolford adds that an endless mode is also in development. Ixion’s main campaign is very narrative-heavy, with the player taking control of a colony ship searching for a new home for humanity after the accidental destruction of the Moon (oops) causes massive destruction and weather impacts on Earth. . With the planet barren and lifeless, the Tiqqun spacecraft flies over the solar system and beyond in hopes of finding viable planets that could support human life.
Players will be on their own, as insect and algae farms are the main sources of food production on board your interstellar city. Woolford emphasizes storytelling: “The story is very, very important to the game, and we hope it’s one of the unique elements of the game. Hopefully, when you get to the later stages of the game, and whether or not you achieve your ultimate goal of find a habitable planet, you will feel a real connection with the station and the survivors that you have dragged through the chapters of the challenge.
However, Wolford says he knows players will likely want to keep playing after their first exposure to the story. “We know that players will need an endless mode, that’s what we envision.” Our preview of Ixion was certainly very promising, with hints of 2001: A Space Odyssey, particularly the useful AI program Eden. Woolford points to Ad Astra and The Expanse as other points of inspiration, taking a very human approach. “We took notes on the challenge and the feeling of having to rule the population and feel responsible for this world.”
Ixion’s release date is currently set for November 16, but in the meantime, you can try the best space games on PC to satisfy your intergalactic cravings. We also have plenty of the best strategy games to browse if you prefer to stick to your guns.
