The Dark Pictures Anthology series of interactive horror films will conclude this year with the fourth and final volume of the first season. According to the creators, the upcoming second season will be significantly different, at least in terms of gameplay. This fall, however, we have The Devil in Me title, which will in many ways look and function like we’re used to with this series – although it will be almost twice as long (allegedly 7-8 hours per playthrough), it will offer partial improvements to the mechanics (mostly options for navigating the environment, interactions and a stealth mechanic for hiding from enemies). Of course, it will also offer an entirely new story that you will have to guide five characters through in order for at least one of them to survive.
The plot of the game was inspired by the real-life serial killer H. H. Holmes, who opened a hotel in Chicago in 1893, in which he deliberately installed many hidden mechanisms and traps in order to subsequently kill several dozen people there. Stylistically, the creators of the game were inspired mainly by the Saw movie series, so you will encounter insidious killing mechanisms such as gas chambers, circular saws and so on. Your characters are members of a small film crew making documentaries about similar historical events, but unfortunately they remain trapped in a modern-day imitation inspired by Mr. Holmes’ hotel.
I had the opportunity to see about twenty minutes of the game in action and then talk about my experience directly with one of the key developers, which was game director Tom Heaton. We both pretty easily agreed that one of the game’s best features is the role of actress Jessie Buckley, who looks a bit like Ellen Ripley from Aliens. She is exactly the type of seemingly inconspicuous, but very charismatic and capable heroine who could be a great “last girl” in history. In any case, the game has every chance to please all fans of the series.
The game will release on November 18, 2022 for PS4, PS5, X1, XSX|S and PC, but in the meantime, you can add it to your wishlist on Steam.
