Mojang has changed Steve and Alex’s default Minecraft skins, and Steve’s beard is finally back in Minecraft after years of shaving. The iconic blue shirt face from the creation game, the original Minecraft model of Steve with a brown beard that many players mistook for a beaming smile, but was removed in an effort to give the character a more neutral look in standard sandbox gameplay . .
In 2014, Minecraft introduced another default skin, Minecraft Alex. In a green top and long red ponytail, Alex looks a bit more feminine than Steve’s model. Helen Chang, Microsoft’s Minecraft studio head, said in a 2018 interview that the company wanted the Minecraft brand to subvert traditional gender stereotypes by portraying Alex and Steve as having the same physical qualities and abilities.
With two options now available to players, the decision was made to bring back Steve’s famous goatee. A post on the Minecraft subreddit highlighted new skins that also improve Alex’s shading to give the second character model a more natural 3D look. Much of the reaction so far has been celebratory, with fans especially excited about the return of Steve’s original bearded look.
Many reviewers say they are glad that Steve has returned to match the look that appears in most of the official artwork, including the character’s appearance in a fight in Nintendo Super Smash Bros Ultimate. “I understand why they removed it in the first place,” says the top-voted comment on the Reddit thread at time of writing, “but it was clearly a big part of Steve’s design, and Mojang seems to be okay with that. . I am glad to see the official return of him after all these years.”
Jasper Burstra, Lead Minecraft Artist i went to twitter comments on the change by saying “I’m glad you’re enjoying the return of the beard!” Boerstra also noted that the new skins used for the classic techniques of rayures and “coussin d’ombrage” “pour ajouter un peu de ce culot de premier order”, more demande aux joueurs ce qu’ils pensent si c’est une bonne solution or not. The skins also include classic options if you prefer the old look.
