The Champions of Chaos DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3 follows the Warriors of Chaos who were the stars of Total War: Warhammer’s first DLC back in 2016. At the time, it was a pre-order bonus that ended up being free for everyone. . who bought the game in its first week on sale and played differently than the four factions included in the base game. Now, the first DLC for Total War: Warhammer 3 shows that the strategy game series is finally making a comeback for a faction that has struggled to keep up with the new roster.

The Creative Assembly tells us that Total Warhammer 3 provided the perfect opportunity to finally return to Chaos Warriors and fix some of the flaws that the developers didn’t anticipate when the Total War series began. Perhaps the main one was the Horde mechanic, taken from Total War: Attila.

“Frankly, we learned a lot about the Horde gameplay from Warhammer 1, and we wanted to fix that with the Champions of Chaos pack, by going back and looking at Warriors of Chaos in general,” DLC director Richard Aldridge tells us.

In the original Warhammer, the Warriors of Chaos were a destructive force coming from the north in the planned invasion of the Old World campaign, much like the arrival of the Huns in Total War: Attila. Playing as one of the three lords included in the pre-order DLC pack, players will control Chaos as a faction of the horde: they will not take over settlements, but instead add “structures” to their mobile hordes that unlock new bonuses and units. . types .

“In Warhammer 1, when the dwarves and the greenskins had a division [on the map] so they could interact, and the Empire and the Vampire Counts were separate, people wanted to touch everything,” says Champions of Chaos lead designer Sean McDonald. “And the hordes always felt like they never touched any of it because they couldn’t handle it. They couldn’t own it themselves.”

That changes with the release of Champions of Chaos, which launches alongside the Immortal Empires beta campaign on August 23. Chaos Warrior factions will be able to occupy special Dark Fortress regions found in the Chaos Wastes and Norscan lands. do, they can build a fortress.

The expansion also adds a new sense of permanence and progress to the armies of Chaos. Instead of simply adding horde structures, players can “tag” their low level units and level them up through the Chaos ranks, even choosing to dedicate deadly units to a particular Chaos God. You will decide who to promote to your team based on which units will be most useful to you.

“In Warhammer 3, with the Chaos Warriors, we really wanted to say, do you have to have buildings attached to your army to be a horde? Or can we really make the game around the horde? McDonald explains. “It’s not about what binds you, it’s about how you play.”

The release date for Total War: Warhammer 3 Champions of Chaos is fast approaching and four new lords will be added to the game: Festus Leelord, Valkia the Bloody, Vilitch the Damned, and Azazel, the Prince of Doom, pictured above. They are united by the fact that they are all somewhere on the path of ascension from mere mortals to mighty Chaos Daemon.
