The new Stardew Valley mod gives you the ability to change the sprite and portrait in Eric Baron’s serene farming RPG, and adds the ability to change race, gender, and other aspects if you want to create a more rural neutral village. and more diverse.
“In this mod, there is an option to change the sprite art and portrait of all villagers and some background characters to be more androgynous,” says creator sqbr. “What counts as ‘androgynous’ is quite subjective and depends on context, but my goal was to create art that could be read as masculine, feminine, or ambiguous within the limits of my abilities as an artist.
“I used to remove things like full breasts, beards, pointy jaws, makeup, etc. that are only strongly associated with male or female in normal sprite art, even though in real life the gender associations are more complex and not there is a single “androgynous” look.
The mod is easy to install and requires SMAPI, a Stardew Valley mod launcher, and a base content patch. After that, you download the mod file, unzip it, and drag it into your Stardew mods folder. From here you can access a number of sprite and portrait customization options. Sqbr says they’re also working on a gender swap mod that will allow you to change Stardew Valley’s in-game dialogue to reflect different personalities, so their page is definitely worth checking out.
