Alone In The Dark has had a rough ride since its heyday in the 1990s. But the series is back, and this time THQ Nordic is breathing new life into the series with an Alone In the Dark reboot that shifts the focus of the game towards traditional Resident Evil style action in a single player experience.
One of the biggest reveals from the THQ Nordic Showcase on August 12, this remake of Alone In The Dark is created by Pieces Interactive, a team of developers working on a wide variety of games. But for this game, the studio commissioned Mikael Hedberg, who wrote Amnesia and SOMA.
The game will feature an all-new story set in gothic 1920s South America. You play as both Edward Carnby, the series’ classic hero, and Emily Hartwood, Jeremy Hartwood’s childhood. Each character offers different perspectives on the story, with their own cutscenes and levels.
The game takes you back to Derceto Manor, a mental institution, a land filled with rich and strange creatures and elusive inhabitants, to uncover mysteries and history about Jeremy Hartwood. This sets the scene very similar to the original.
The game’s trailer only offers a very brief look at gameplay, but it’ll be a mix of shoulder-to-shoulder combat similar to what you’ll find in The Evil Within and the new Resident Evil remakes – and the resolution of puzzles as you explore the mansion.
As you saw behind the scenes in The Loadout trailer and an extended gameplay demo, this version of Alone In The Dark definitely has a compelling vibe and direction. And it seems to be bringing the series into the modern age by focusing on the gripping and intense survival horror action that has enjoyed success over the past decade.
At Gamescom 2022, a prologue demo featuring Grace from the exclusive show Alone In The Dark 2 will be available to play. The content will not be part of the main game, but will set reboot events prior to the game’s release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. We’re playing this demo at Gamescom, so stay tuned this month for more details and impressions.
Unfortunately, the release date for Alone In The Dark has not been announced, so we’ll have to wait and find out more.
