It’s been almost a decade since Three Fields Entertainment was founded by former Need For Speed and Burnout developers Alex Ward, Fiona Sperry and Paul Ross. After leaving Criterion and developing a Burnout-esque called Dangerous Driving, the studio is back with Wreckreation, the UGC-focused single racer that seems to blend the custom racing frenzy of GTA Online with an open-world sandbox. Games like Forza Horizon 5.
Unveiled in the THQ Nordic showcase, Wreckreation takes place entirely on your own personal map called MixWorld. This open-world sandbox is packed with a range of tools to build and design your own tracks and wreck races filled with crashes, collisions or crazy twists and turns.
These courses can be created by yourself or in collaboration with friends, and the range of possibilities seems impressive. Loadout saw a behind-the-scenes demonstration of how the game’s toolset works; This focuses on hundreds of track parts and a host of features that allow you to create any track or racetrack you really want.
Your MixWorld focuses on rural landscapes and hills to give you the freedom to create whatever you want, with 440,000 square miles and 440 kilometers of roads. While Events are simple point-to-point races on the road, Wreckreation’s real hook seems to be the number of items you can place on the track, similar to what’s possible in Forza Horizon’s Event Lab. 5.
From the simple ramps you can see in the screenshots below to massive monolithic structures, there seem to be almost no restrictions on what you can do. Likewise, you can customize nearly every aspect of the racing experience right from the start of the game, from the look and handling of the car to the weather and other racing rules.
And all of this can be done alone or with your friends in real time, creating trails and big trails together, before competing in a race.
Wreckreation has made an impressive debut and can definitely create great gaming moments with your group of friends and become a huge hit on Twitch if its community features are strong enough.
But the look at the game was brief, and a release date for Wreckreation hasn’t been announced, so it’s clear the game needs some time and tweaking to get going. The game is expected to come to PS5, PS4, Xbox X|S, Xbox One, and PC at launch. Programming will continue with the game at Gamescom 2022, so pay attention to impressions of how the cars are handled and the options available to the player.
