The quirk of The Sims 4 School years makes the classes a little dark

The Sims 4 High School years got off to a rocky start, and while Maxis fixed most of the new bugs in the game, including the major incest bug, players still face a few issues, namely everyone dying at school. The game replaces dead NPCs with other random sims, so it’s not a major issue aside from relationship planning with the deceased. However, there is no denying that it adds a rather unpleasant atmosphere to the daily routine. Going to school every day is bad enough, but seeing your teacher die is enough to change someone’s mood forever.

Or so you think. A recent instance of a teacher’s instant death, reported by Reddit user hyruleinkling, had little to no effect on the mood of the class or even the flow of the conference. They all sat in silence until the end of the lesson, then dispersed.

Other cases reported by players were less traumatic, but only marginal. One player said that the Grim Reaper was particularly active at his school, bringing the principal, bartender, and janitor with him during the week. The Sims 4 then replaced them with townspeople, some of whom looked almost exactly like the dead.

The foundations of the problem are separated from the school years and arise from issues related to the operation of neighborhood stories. System introduced in 2021 supposed to make Sims more exciting by giving NPCs more dynamic lives. In practice, it tends to randomly kill them for the most random reasons you can imagine.

You usually can’t see how a Sim died unless you’re linked to them. One Redditer user said he was able to figure out why a distant Sim family member died thanks to a family tree, and it showed the cause of death to be a killer chicken, a potential danger in the Cottage Living pack. This has led some to speculate that the game goes through random deaths without aging into those incidents.

The issue is how often sims die with neighborhood stories enabled. They can literally walk out of your house after a visit and drop dead. As expected, this spoils the fun, but there is a simple solution. You can simply disable them in settings or set the NPCs you want to keep as “immortals” to fix this issue.
