CS:GO update will remove players from ranks, at least temporarily

If you haven’t taken a close look at the Counter Strike: Global Offensive blog, you might not know where your in-game ranking is. In the latest update, CS:GO rankings have been readjusted, and Although it looks like Valve has reset everyone’s skills, don’t panic because it hasn’t.

As Valve tries to make competitive FPS gaming a little more competitive again, the CS:GO leaderboard recalibration update comes hot on the heels of what appears to be the biggest ban wave in gaming history.” When we release changes to the CS:GO ranking system, the changes are often too minor to include in our patch notes,” Valve says on the blog. “However, today’s update affects all CS:GO players, so it needs some explaining.”

All players who wish to return to competitive play must now play in one of the game’s core modes (Competitive, Wingman, and Danger Zone). and Win a game to readjust their order. Once the winnings are recorded, your MMR will be calculated and you will be placed back into one of the game’s many skill sets.

According to Valve, the majority of players will notice a change in their rating, but there will only be one player who will be exactly where they were before the update. This is apparently his intention.

This isn’t the first time Valve has recalibrated the CS:GO ratings. In 2016, Valve “fixed” the ranking system in the Winter Update, which severely downgraded many players in the ranking system. For example, players who were Legendary Eagle Masters became a kind of Master Guardian.

A few players on Reddit have shared their ranking stories, and while there have been big wins and losses, the gains mostly show up in smaller regions like OCE. But we will know in a few weeks how far the calibration effects will go.

Either way, it’s a great move by Valve. Players have long been reporting inconsistencies in the ranking system, and while it’s frustrating to fight for your position again, it’s good to see Valve taking a stand on promoting competitive integrity across the board.
