Logitech and Tencent are planning a competing Steam Deck cloud

Logitech and Tencent are teaming up to create a Steam Deck competitor that will use cloud services like Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming. The device will apparently help gamers “play AAA games while away from their console or PC,” something gaming laptops can already accomplish without a cloud connection.

The Tencent Games laptop brought to you by Logitech aims to “make portable cloud gaming better” and support multiple services like GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Unlike the Steam Deck, the portable version will not feature powerful AMD APUs or hardware that can directly run games, but will still aim to provide a gaming PC on the go.

In a partnership announcement with Tencent, Logitech G General Manager Ujesh Desai said, “The idea of being able to stream and play AAA games almost anywhere is exciting and we can’t wait to show it off to everyone we work with.” . Additionally, Tencent General Manager Daniel Wu claims that the device will “push the limits of gaming devices,” which is perhaps a general reference to the limits of home equipment.

Again, Logitech’s new Tencent Cloud laptop is different from the Steam Deck, but both will be fighting for the same slice of the pie in the laptop market. If you don’t have access to a stable internet connection, or just aren’t sure about the shenanigans of the cloud, you’re more likely to opt for a traditional laptop.

However, if Logitech’s dream machine can power a desktop experience via the cloud, it could be a game changer for the gaming laptop space. In theory, a streaming service could completely eliminate the need for expensive graphics cards and gaming processors, but relying on an internet connection makes that a pipe dream for many.

Logitech hasn’t shown what the cloud device actually looks like, so we’ll have to wait a bit to see how much it looks like Valve’s hardware device. It’s easy to assume that it will be smaller than most gaming laptops, especially since it will have far fewer operations under the hood. However, it will be interesting to see how it compares to the upcoming Steam Deck 2, both in terms of size and gameplay.
