The developers explained how the Chaos DLC for Total Warhammer 3 will work

Chaos has always been present to some extent in Total War: Warhammer strategy games, but with the arrival of Total Warhammer 3, it has been thrust into the spotlight. This raised several important questions about the organization of the factions: Chaos is not just one race or faction, it encompasses mortals and demons, and is divided between the four dark gods of Chaos. The Creative Assembly Warhammer team has released a new post detailing how the studio manages this complex web of interconnected factions, lords, and deities.

The upcoming Champions of Chaos DLC, which will launch alongside the Immortal Empires campaign in August, is at the center of much confusion surrounding Chaos. It’s a group of lords, and each of the four legendary lords it adds is clearly associated with a particular Chaos God: Khorne, Slaanesh, Nurgle, and Tzeentch.

However, these lords join the Chaos Warriors faction that was originally introduced in the first Total Warhammer. This bandit faction generally worships Chaos, and their overlords spread the corruption of Undivided Chaos. These new lords will distribute as “regular” Chaos Undivided Corruption, as good as Corruption specific to the Chaos God they have chosen and have access to some of those Gods’ units and mechanics. It has become a bit difficult to know for sure who a given lord is working for.

Creative Assembly says that the new Lords Pack gave the studio the opportunity to “reintroduce” the iconic Chaos Warrior race in a way that adds color and mechanical depth to the faction. The new Demon Lords that Azazel and Festus have experienced so far will provide new ways to play as Chaos Warriors, which will be shaped by a specific Chaos God, rather than the broad umbrella of Chaos Undivided.

The studio also says that adding these demon lords to Chaos Warriors doesn’t prevent mortal characters from being added to “mongod” faction rosters. Creative Assembly says it will handle this on a “DLC by DLC” basis, with some mortal characters fitting more comfortably into the one-god faction’s demonic rosters, while others may need their own mechanics.

The new DLC lords have special traits that set them apart from the rest of the Chaos Warriors and their Monogod counterparts. You’ll be able to start recruiting demons and marking mortals on your first turn, making the whole process easier and cheaper.

They also share a common tech tree that allows them to specialize in units and mechanics specific to their god, and will spread their god’s corruption. They will also gain the combat mechanics and abilities of their god’s army, as well as versions of their god’s faction campaign features; for example, Festus will be able to spawn and spread plagues like Ku’gath, although they are slightly different for the two. . Sirs

Creative Assembly also notes that initially it will be impossible to unify all Chaos Warriors – the team hoped to allow Archaon to succeed, but this idea ran into some balance issues.

“We know this is important to you and we will look to include some kind of confederation of warriors in a post-launch patch,” says Creative Assembly. “We will talk more about how we strive to achieve this feat in the future!”
