Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, said that the Epic Games Store will “certainly not restrict” the sale of NFT games. Sweeney’s comment follows a statement from Minecraft developer Mojang outlining the company’s stance on not allowing blockchain or NFT technology in Minecraft.
After Mojang’s statement, a fan took to Sweeney on Twitter to see if Epic Games would take a similar stance, but Sweeney answered negatively.
“Developers should be free to decide how to make their games, and you should be free to decide if you want to play them,” he says. “I think that stores and operating system manufacturers should not interfere by imposing their opinions on others. We certainly won’t.
Another user responded to Sweeney’s comments by asking how this differs from Epic Games’ policy of banning hateful and discriminatory content. Sweeney said the difference comes down to “editorial and brand judgment” and believes that Epic prefers to “draw a line on generally accepted standards.”
Some users on the PC gaming subreddit took issue with Sweeney’s stance, noting that Epic’s CEO has already spoken out strongly against NFTs. In September 2021, Sweeney made public a copy of the emailed response. reply on twitterwhich reads: “We are not addressing NFTs as the entire field is currently entangled with an unsolvable mix of scams, interesting decentralized tech funds, and scams.”
Sweeney now makes it clear that he thinks developers using the Epic Game Store should be able to do these integrations if they want to. he said in follow-up tweet that “cryptocurrency is complex. There are promising things, there are bad things and everyone has to make their own decision.
Other users in the Reddit thread referred to a 2019 interview with PC Gamer in which Sweeney said that the Epic Games Store “doesn’t accept bad games” and reflected on how Epic decides which games meet or fail their quality bar.
In contrast, Valve, which does not monitor the games it allows on its Steam store, took action in October 2021 to remove and ban games that use blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, or NFTs from its Steam store.
In February, independent game store Itch.io also took issue with NFTs, saying they were only used to “exploit creators, financial scams, and destroy the planet.”
