Ricardo Chantilly, managing partner of the AfroGames project, told The Enemy that the project is needed to give “digital citizenship” to underprivileged children and teenagers. “When we talk about the AfroGames project, it is clear that this part shines in the eyes, but that’s not all. We don’t just learn from games, we teach digital citizenship. We take these kids into the world of millionaire games.”

Chantilly also says that although there are “games” in its name, the project goes beyond just learning to play. “How many professional players will come out of this 300? I don’t know if it’s one or both, the others will know how to use computers, speak English, use study tools, use e-mail… These children will know. how to use the computer on the labor market in two or three years and thus have opportunities on the labor market”.

AfroReggae Executive Coordinator William Reis says these new units, the new AfroGames units, represent the consolidation of the project. “We are very happy with the opening of two more units of the project that has changed the face of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro”.

“Students from Nova Holland and Morro do Timbau will be able to learn everything they want in the gaming world and see a new job market. “Our project has grown and is starting to expand to other parts of Rio de Janeiro.”

In its three years of existence, AfroGames has trained around 370 young people in the Vigário Geral unit alone. With these two new units at Complexo da Maré, the project should train more than 300 young people per year.

The project received recognition and was a finalist for the CCXP Awards in the Esports Organization category along with Furia, Loud, Pain Gaming and Red Canids. AfroGames features professional LoL, Fortnite and Free Fire teams competing in professional tournaments including the Brazilian Free Fire League (LBFF) Series C.

The opening of the Nova Holanda and Morro do Timbau units was sponsored by Facebook Meta’s parent company, IHS Brasil, which operates and develops the mobile communications infrastructure with the Municipal Secretary of Culture of Rio de Janeiro, Rede Globo and others. .

Ricardo Chantilly also indicates that AfroGames will soon continue to expand to Niterói, a city in Greater Rio. That’s why all of Brazil needed more initiatives like AfroGames. “With a third of Brazil’s population starving and people very poor, we have to be part of a transformation.”

“I always say that our aim is to follow the example of India 20 years ago, which was still a big and poor country. Today, it is a country that exports the greatest minds in technology and programming. I see a great resemblance there with the Brazilian favelas. This project will change the lives not only of the boys, but also of hundreds of families.
