Arguably the biggest announcement of Tennocon 2022 was Warframe developer Digital Extremes revealing their next game, Soulframe, a Studio Ghibli-inspired fantasy MMO. Now, additional Soulframe details reveal that it will be an open-world game at launch, with From Software’s Elden Ring being “the talking point.”
One of the major announcements from Tennocon was that Warframe boss Steve Sinclair is stepping down in favor of Rebecca Ford. PCGamesN spoke with Warframe’s new creative director about the open world expansion Duviri Paradox, but Sinclair won’t be leaving Digital Extremes, instead directing a new Soulframe game.
In an interview with The Washington Post, Sinclair confirms that Soulframe’s hub world will be open, unlike early Warframes. “I’m chasing that ‘short but highly immersive session’ where you log in, come out of your yurt and end up where you last logged out,” confirms the director. “The world feels like it’s happening without you.”
Sinclair adds that despite the game’s title, Dark Souls is “definitely not the inspiration for the original ideas or what we wanted to do” with Soulframe. However, From Software’s latest Elden Ring “absolutely had some arguments”, such as regarding the camera or “the quality of its combat pacing”. As Sinclair admits, Elden Ring “was absolutely fantastic.”
You can get a taste of the fight in the opening trailer above, but Soulframe is still a long way off. While the team wants to be open, especially with Warframe’s leadership change, Sinclair agrees: “It’s actually too early to announce Soulframe!”
However, test fans can play Soulframe all year long with early development streams. “See how we make the game, grab the drafts and let us know how you feel,” Sinclair confirms, similar to how Digital Extremes introduces Warframe.
As for Warframe, before the release of The Duviri Paradox, it will receive another expansion called Veilbreaker dedicated to Kal.
