Digital Extremes has announced Soulframe, a new Studio Ghibli-inspired MMO currently in development. Developer Warframe has consistently released new updates for its RPG over seven years of real-time work: Legendary content, quality of life changes, new ways to play with weapons, additional Warframes, and new mounts. With the development team changing and Rebecca Ford as creative director for Warframe, the studio has unveiled its next multiplayer game at TennoCon 2022.
Soulframe, which was rumored after it was released by Digital Extremes in May, introduces a new free-to-play MMORPG hybrid action game from the developers of Warframe. “With the thematic and world-building elements of Soulframe, we really want to go back to our childhood favorites like The Neverending Story and those elaborate fantasy worlds,” says Soulframe Creative Director Jeff Crooks.
The recently announced MMO is influenced by various art and fantasy genres, but not just Western art. Hayao Miyazaki’s work, along with other Studio Ghibli projects, is a key source of inspiration for Soulframe’s fantasy elements. “Our team really likes Miyazaki and Princess Mononoke, where there is a sense of a collision between nature and humanity, and we will be exploring many themes related to nature, restoration and exploration in this new game,” says Crooks.
Digital Extremes says that Soulframe’s direction will be recognizable to many Warframe players. You can start following the early stages of Soulframe ahead of its release on Soulframe’s Instagram, subscribe to the game’s YouTube channel, and visit the official Soulframe website to start showing your interest ahead of the game’s release.
The Soulframe website will host an interactive puzzle game before players can join in for updates, access, information, and more on new Digital Extremes IP to be released at a later date. Users can also “advertise your messenger” to reserve their Soulframe character’s in-game name for an upcoming game.
