PlayStation users have long sought trophies to mark their in-game achievements, but a new free loyalty program launched by Sony could change that. So what exactly is PlayStation Stars?
Announced on the PlayStation Blog in July 2022, PlayStation Stars This is a new system that rewards users for completing simple in-game tasks. Starting later this year, the program is free and open to everyone. It allows members to accumulate points over time, and they can then convert those points into PlayStation Store rewards or “digital collectibles” which Sony says aren’t tied to blockchain or non-tradable tokens. (NFT). Instead, they’re just digital representations of footage from the best PS5 games.
Sounds interesting, but for now Sony has left us with more questions than answers about the initial reward system. So, if you’re wondering when the PlayStation Stars system will be released, how it will work, and what kind of rewards you can earn, let’s try to answer those questions.
PlayStation Stars release date
We don’t currently know the exact release date for PlayStation Stars. Sony says the plan will launch later this year, but exactly when that will happen is a mystery.
What is the PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program?
PlayStation Stars is a free loyalty program that rewards users for playing games. It works similarly to the Microsoft rewards program or the Nintendo points system, where players get points for completing certain tasks. These missions vary in difficulty and can be as simple as logging in every month, winning a tournament, or unlocking certain trophies.
However, players are also rewarded for the impossible. Prizes will be awarded to players who achieve the first platinum game in their region, another incentive for the trophy hunters among us.
PS Plus members also earn points for purchases made through the store.
All of these challenges accumulate points which can then be converted into items such as PSN wallet funds or store items. Certain challenges will also unlock digital collectibles, which Sony says are “digital representations of what PlayStation fans love”. It remains to be seen what it is exactly.
Will PlayStation Stars have NFTs?
Contrary to popular belief, the digital collections that Sony is talking about are not NFTs. Although extremely rare and difficult to obtain, Grace Chen, vice president of network advertising, told the Washington Post that “you can’t trade or sell them” and “they don’t use technologies of the blockchain”.
