World of Warcraft survives and even thrives thanks to active, knowledgeable, and above all, confident players. Thanks to the system of public test worlds and player feedback, Blizzard has done a commendable job of adjusting their plans as needed, especially ahead of the new expansion.

Last month, Blizzard introduced new death knight talent trees that will roll out alongside the release of Dragonflight. As with other class revamps, the main focus of these changes is to reintroduce choice and careful spec building by making talent trees more complex. Unfortunately, this process is complicated, and based on player feedback during the Dragonflight alpha, Blizzard will be making changes to their plans for Death Knights. Let’s quickly review the main points.

In the main class tree, the main complaint was that talent selection is too linear, with little variation in talent selection. This certainly goes against one of the stated goals of the talent system overhaul; to introduce more customization in the class specification.

To address this, Blizzard is revamping some nodes, adding blood branch connectors to Frost and Unholy, as well as adding additional nodes before the first few gates close. The tree seems more interconnected, which should improve decision making for these useful abilities. There are still some known bugs that will be included in the next alpha release, but we are still at an early stage.

Most of the other changes will affect the unholy tree, which had issues with the dreaded “reload desync.” Dead Air: Gaps in your rotation that affect both your performance and the enjoyment of playing in class.

The main goals of the Unholy changes are to fix cooldown desync, reduce RNG mechanics, and change the tree structure. Death Coil and Infectious Wound have been removed or reworked, dependencies on Unholy Command and Army of the Damned have been removed, and Summon Gargoyle and Epidemic should be buffed as they both feel weak. In addition, the relationship in the tree will be improved, which will allow greater flexibility in the specification and reduce the number of dependencies and errors.
