EA and Maxis are shipping a new free update to The Sims 4 that adds a ton of customization options so you can tailor your Sim’s sexual and romantic orientation to your liking, or in some cases yours. Developed by EA in association with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the update will launch alongside the High School Years expansion on July 28. While this won’t change the preferences of existing Sims NPCs, future Sims, and others, the School Years expansion will have some new benchmarks.
The new options will be available in the “Details” section of the “Create a Sim” menu, where you select your Sim’s gender. Here you will find three categories:
- This Sim is romantically attracted to (male/female)
- This Sim explores romantic relationships (Yes/No)
- This sim is interested in playing with (male/female)
Jessica Croft, lead designer for The Sims 4, said the team wanted to implement a workable way for people who identify as asexual or aromantic to also express themselves in detail. For example, you can turn off both “blunders” options and choose sex for romantic attraction, or refrain from romantic relationships while continuing to engage in physically intimate relationships.
If you play High School Years, and probably all the new expansions that follow, the way you build those relationships will also change. Instead of flattering and joking your way to love and marriage, you should meet another Sim and find out if he identifies the same way you do.
This personality can change over time if you turn on the “romantic exploration” option. Maxis said that, just like real life, adolescence is about figuring out who you are, so your Sim can start high school with a romantic preference and end up with something completely different when he graduates. . However, if you know exactly how you want your Sim to be, simply choose no and you’ll live with a fixed orientation.
Croft said the system does not allow for non-binary or transgender options at this time. However, this new update is part of the game’s journey, not the end, and may be expanded in the future.
If you’re looking for more ways to customize your Sims experience, there are plenty of Sims 4 mods to choose from, like one that will make your kids a little less monstrous. You can also bend its rules to your will with an impressive array of cheats, including easy ways to earn money and defy death.
