The developer behind the highly anticipated Skate game has revealed that not only will it not be called Skate 4, but it will be a free-to-play game set in a new city called Saint Vansterdam. Officially called “skate,” the new open-world game isn’t a sequel, reboot, or remake, but rather a platform that the developers plan to support “for years to come.”
“We dream that Skate will never end,” says Isabelle Mokkar, head of product management at Full Circle, a development studio made up of a team of Skate franchise veterans and newcomers. Full Circle plans to continue adding to Skate for the foreseeable future, adding new events, cosmetics, and gameplay items in response to player feedback.
The team says they want as many people as possible to be able to play Skate and be able to play with friends, so the new Skate will also be cross-platform between next-gen consoles and current-gen PCs. and possibly mobile devices. Progress will also be distributed across all devices, so you can log in from any convenient device.
According to Full Circle, going free-to-play meant setting firm ground rules for using Skate’s microtransactions, which will be necessary to generate the revenue needed for long-term support. These rules, as explained by Full Circle GM Dan McCulloch, include never making Skate a paid game, never blocking areas of the map with paywalls, using loot boxes, and never selling in-game items that provide in-game benefits. . .
Instead, the team says it will use successful models like EA’s free-to-play battle royale game Apex Legends, with the idea of keeping players together regardless of whether they decide to spend money on the game or not.
As for a release date, Full Circle says that Skate will be released “when it’s ready.”
