Overwatch 2 players in the second beta version of the FPS game spent a lot of time getting used to the new tank hero Junker Queen. However, there are concerns that his character model may not match his tank status, and one fan used some basic measurements to demonstrate why his size may be an issue for multiplayer readability.
Reddit user WenisDongerAndAssocs posted on the Overwatch subreddit (spotted by GamesRadar+) explaining why he thinks the current Junker Queen model isn’t tanky enough. In his own words, “The Junker Queen breaks the rules of tank proportions.” Among them is an image showing that all other tanks in Overwatch are no more than twice his width, with the exception of Zarya, who is 2.75 times his width. By comparison, the Junker Queen is about 3.5 times as tall as it is wide.
At seven feet tall (according to Bizzard Senior Art Director Casey Helms), the Junker Queen is far from small, but the size can be deceiving, especially from a distance. As Venis Donger points out, Overwatch’s tanks are designed in such a way that “their broad silhouettes communicate protection and stability.” It’s not all about aesthetics though – it’s about quickly recognizing where certain types of heroes are in the middle of a fight, and many players on the Reddit thread say they mistake Junker Queen for a DPS hero at first glance.
“She strikes me as a walking farrah,” says one commenter, while others say they “have a hard time telling Junker Queen from Sojourn, especially considering how often they appear together in the game right now” due to their being the newest pair of heroes in the game. Another comment states that she “at certain distances she resembles Ash”.
Regardless of which hero players mistake her for, her form is certainly a potential problem, whether the Junker Queen in question is friend or foe. While many players tell tales of bonding with Roadhog or dive into it only to find they are up against a tankier hero than they originally expected, others are finding it increasingly difficult to keep their own Junker Queen alive. In particular, some Ana players say that Ana’s thinner hitbox makes it difficult for her to sustain her in chaotic encounters.
Some comments point to Junker Queen’s low 425 health with no armor or shields as a counterbalance to her smaller hitbox, but other people say her set of abilities already makes up for her low health. With a huge health drain from her passives and a Command Shout that gives her 200 extra health and a huge mobility boost, Junker Queen is certainly well equipped for the fight.
In a post about the second beta, Blizzard states that Junker Queen “is a good fit for Overwatch 2’s more offensive and aggressive playstyle.” The team doesn’t offer any comment that might indicate they’re not happy with its size, though they do note that it’s “still in the early stages of testing” so there’s always a chance these issues will be ironed out in the future. However, reworking the entire hero form factor is a bit more involved than the quick Photoshop job suggested by WenisDonger in his original thread.
If you’re not already in Overwatch 2 Beta 2, you can get guaranteed access, if you’re willing to pay for it. Blizzard also recently shared how the Overwatch team designed Junker Queen’s abilities to suit her violent nature.
