Forspoken, an RPG published by Square-Enix that was originally scheduled to release in May, was delayed for the second time as the creators announced that the game is in its “final polishing stage” and that all elements of the game “Now they are complete.”

Forspoken’s May release was initially pushed back to October, but now Square-Enix and developer Luminous Productions have announced that the game will launch on January 24, 2023. The decision appears to have been made after discussions with “key partners” and could potentially tie in with other games scheduled for release in October – A Plague Tale: Requiem, Gotham Knights and of course Call of Duty: With Modern Warfare 2 competing for consumer money – there’s a risk of new IP being removed like Forspoken, regardless of its development pedigree.

Despite the delay, the creators of Forspoken have promised that more details about the game will be revealed soon.

“We want to thank you for your continued support and patience throughout the entire process,” reads the game’s official Twitter account. “Your enthusiasm for the game inspires us every day and we look forward to telling you more about Forspoken later this summer.”

Originally titled Project Athia, Forspoken follows Frey Holland, a modern-day New York woman who, along with her cat Homer, is transported into the magical world of Athia. She finds herself immune to a cursed magical storm called the Rift that is killing the people of Atia and must use a variety of abilities to try to get home.

It stars Charlie’s Angels’ Ella Balinska as Frey and is co-written by Gary Witta, who wrote Telltale’s The Walking Dead and the Star Wars: Rogue One story, and Uncharted series creator Amy Hennig.
