Diablo the Immortal associated with an aggressive system of micropayments. But despite the criticism, the free game earns over a million dollars a day on average on mobile alone. Mike Ybarra, CEO of Blizzard, defends microtransactions and notes that most people play Diablo Immortal.

“When we thought about monetization, we thought, how can we offer Diablo to hundreds of millions of users for free, so that they can enjoy literally 99.5% of the content for free? Monetization occurs at the end of the game. The goal has always been to start with great gameplay and have hundreds of millions of players play the campaign for free. From this point of view, I am very pleased with the game as an introduction to Diablo. Ibarra stated this in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

Blizzard doesn’t care about the historically lowest user rating for their game on the Metacritic server. Ibarra noted in an interview rating 4.5/5 in the App Store and 3.1/5 in Google Play. This shows that Diablo Immortal appealed to a wider audience that doesn’t complain about microtransactions. In Google Play, this is an average of 680 thousand reviews (more than 5 million downloads), and in the App Store – almost 115 thousand reviews.

Diablo Immortal was released on 06/02/2022 for Android and iOS, the PC version is in public beta via Battle.net. The game quickly received negative reviews due to the heavy focus on microtransactions. The backlash was fueled by news that character upgrades could cost players up to $110,000.
