After Warzone’s hugely successful embrace of the Battle Royale genre in March 2019, it looks like Modern Warfare 2 will see the Call of Duty series attempt to take over the extraction shooter genre with its equally free-to-play DMZ mode. Officially, not much is known about this new game mode. However, a recent leak seems to suggest that Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode will borrow more than we initially thought from Escape From Tarkov, arguably the game of most successful shot.
Shared on Twitter by initially-suspended Call of Duty data mining “RealiityUK”, a list of in-game items players can expect to see in Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode reveals that the extraction shooter will learn from Escape From Tarkov when it launches. This includes keys, looting, and the game economy as a whole (possibly deleting).
In Battlestate Games’ Escape From Tarkov, players can find the game’s best loot behind closed doors. Auxiliary items such as keys and cards are categorized as Intel in Escape From Tarkov and can lead to many achievements when the correct Intel is present.
Why is this important? It looks like Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode is inspired by this mechanic and will have quite a few keys for players to get their hands on in-game.
The leak, which you can see courtesy of the ‘VexeraTV’ repost below, reveals that useful items like ‘Night Vision Goggles’ and ‘Hindia Chopper’ will be available in-game alongside items like as “Factory entrance key”, “Foreman’s office key”. ‘. ‘ and ‘Secure room key 19’.

This list of leaked items players will find in Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode is far from complete and should be taken with a grain of salt until we see something more official. Still, to some degree, it shows that this new game mode might look a little more like Escape From Tarkov than we initially thought. We don’t think the DMZ will offer as many ammo types as the extraction shooter on PC, but it certainly could have a dynamic economy and persistent loot system that makes sense for exciting risk-reward gameplay. which animates the extraction shooters.
Battlefield 2042 halts development of Hazard Zone, EA’s attempt to conquer the extraction shooter genre in its flagship FPS series, so it’s not easy to replicate the success of Escape From Tarkov with the DMZ mode of Modern Warfare 2. Warzone’s explosive popularity is everything, we can expect a surprise hit from Call of Duty once again as it moves away from its small-scale, team-based multiplayer roots.
