Diablo Immortal’s microtransactions have already sparked several protests, including YouTubers leaving the game entirely and a streamer deliberately destroying a five-star Legendary Gem after it cost them $15,000.
Well now the rally continues as a fan site, Maxroll, announces the destruction of all the guides it has published for Diablo Immortal in protest of the overall design and monetization systems of the game.
The site, which also covers Diablo 2, Diablo 3, and the Lost Ark, has been posting material on Immortal since the game’s technical alpha release in December 2020. However, it has now made the decision to remove all of its story and Diablo guides. Immortal. ., essentially excluding the Maxroll game altogether. In a recent press release, the site explains that it feels it cannot continue to cover Diablo Immortal “in good faith.”
“We had high hopes for Blizzard’s release of Diablo Immortal as it could bring a new audience and a new generation of gamers to the franchise we love,” the site says. “Over two years, our team (along with the community) thoroughly tested the Technical Alpha, Closed Alpha, and Closed Beta, and concluded that the core game can be turned into something great.
“Considering how the launch went, we are very disappointed. Maxroll exists to serve the members of our community and we see it as our duty to take care of them. As such, we cannot continue to cover this game in good faith.”
Maxroll provides a list of reasons why they decided to remove the Diablo Immortal thread from their site, including “unnecessary play” and “community rejection and backlash.” However, the “main reason” for Maxroll’s decision is Immortal’s economic structure and microtransaction systems, which the site describes as “completely contrary to our values.”
“The predatory pay-to-win system far exceeds what is considered the norm for mobile gaming,” the site continues. “Gaming addiction is real and it can completely ruin a life. Although 99% of players have perfect impulse control, we still don’t understand what happens to the remaining 1%. It goes completely against our values and we will no longer be a part of that.”
At the time of this writing, the Diablo Immortal guides are still available on Maxroll, with the site explaining that they will remain available for a “short time” so that players can save any information they may need. After that, no further updates will be made and the links to Diablo Immortal have already been removed from the Maxroll homepage.
