We still don’t know the release date for Sonic Frontiers, but now we know two much more important facts about the first open world game, Sonic the Hedgehog: there’s a Sonic Frontiers fishing minigame, and Big the Cat, the pilot. He’s now a Game of the Year contender.
If there’s one thing fans of the Sonic platform game series are complaining about, it’s that the games haven’t had a fishing mini-game since 1998’s Sonic Adventure. Big Cat hasn’t appeared on the show since 2003’s Sonic Heroes, that lacked drive. .
Well, apparently that’s about to change, as the latest issue of Game Informer confirms that not only does Big Cat and her frog friend Froggy appear in Sonic Frontiers, but there’s also a fishing minigame. According to the article seen (sigh) @regularpanties On twitter,
Fishing provides the player with tokens that they can spend on “portal gear shards, voice logs, vault keys, or even sequence items like Amy’s collectible heart.” Portal Gears are used to unlock the classic level-themed cyber missions, so it’s worth doing.
You also can’t just fish anytime, as you need to find the purple coins around the Starfall islands to give to Big to unlock other fishing quests. Who knew Big Cat was a capitalist?
You can check out our preview of Sonic Frontiers and find out just how weird a twist Elden Ring is at this link. We’ll find out more when Sonic Frontiers launches in… oh, let’s say (throws dart) in November. Most likely.
