The new major update GZDoom 4.8.1 has been released with a number of new tweaks, fixes and improvements to the typical Doom modding schedule. However, there are some cool mirror effects to especially note, which basically allow you to turn a classic FPS game into a vampire game.
There are many fantastic and inventive Doom mods, such as the Shinobi hack-n-slash mod, the open-world Fallout-like game, and Fred Durst. There’s even a fantastic first-person recreation of one of the best Castlevania games, which could be the perfect upgrade to take full advantage of these new GZDoom features.
You can read the full patch notes and download them for GZDoom 4.8.1 here. There are a lot of nice improvements, like added support for the Vulkan renderer, but the new options for mirrors are particularly intriguing. In addition to improving Doom’s reflection support, the update adds the “+ONLYVISIBLEINMIRRORS” and “+INVISIBLEINMIRRORS” flags for modders to use. Essentially, they add the ability for characters to only appear in mirrors or not reflect in mirrors.
As you can imagine, these adjustments open the door to some potentially scary encounters, as if Doom didn’t have enough creepy mods already. While the vampire undertones are fantastic, I especially like the idea of seeing certain monsters just by their reflections. Imagine a Silent Hill-style Doom mod.

The GZDoom update is out now, and it will likely only take five minutes for Doom modders to start implementing these options in new and exciting ways.
In other creative Doom news, you can now play Doom on a Lego brick or even without turning on your computer properly.
