Minecraft is a place where players can express themselves in many ways. You can play using the space as a Dungeons & Dragons map, recreate your favorite games, or just hang out with friends. This is probably why some people are worried about the new moderation tools.
Let’s be clear: moderation tools are very important on the internet, because you literally can’t trust people to not be the worst if they get the chance. They should work too, though, and several Reddit users have posted their thoughts on it and, to be honest, they’re not at all impressed. Probably the most detailed post on the subject comes from JewelTK, who posted a video talking about it from his perspective as someone with multiple servers.
The video contains profanity, so keep that in mind if you’re going to watch it in full, but there is a warning at the beginning. Although the details of his anxiety are more subtle, you can divide the problems into two parts. First, the system can be abused to ban people who shouldn’t be banned, especially in retaliation for being banned from the server. Second, players have different boundaries between what they consider acceptable and what is not, and different communities already have their own rules. If everything is judged by people who don’t understand anything, it can lead to bans that seem unfair.
Reports in Java chat from the perspective of a Minecraft server host
Redditor Quillka suggested that these particular reporting tools be limited to official Microsoft Realms, for essentially the same reasons as the ones above. They state that “the entire Minecraft player base of all ages cannot be expected to be perfect for children.” It is easy to understand his point of view. While profanity filters help keep kids safe in global chats, in smaller, more controlled communities, groups of adults talking to each other don’t have to worry about swearing. There’s also a lot of Popbobsnob “propaganda” in the less well-rounded storylines, because Minecraft is all about creativity.
If you’re running your own Minecraft space, now might be a good time to take a look at the best Minecraft mods available on your favorite blocky game.
