Space combat in Starfield may be more dangerous than we originally thought, as in-game footage shows that enemy ships can move and ambush each other at literally the speed of light, leaving no corner of the sci-fi RPG truly sure.

As Reddit user blackvrocky pointed out, several shots from Bethesda’s first gameplay demo show two huge flashes of light followed by enemy ships appearing out of nowhere and pointing their weapons at the player. We’re used to being ambushed by Skyrim’s ice trolls, even Deathclaws spawn right behind us in Fallout 4, but that’s ridiculous.

With over 1,000 planets to explore, Starfield’s fast travel system is likely based on the speed of light and warp, but we didn’t know that would apply to our enemies as well. The sci-fi RPG looks nice and serene (a few bugs notwithstanding), but now we’re starting to think that random ship attacks that can jump on you instantly from hyperspace are probably commonplace as we travel and marvel. to the universe

There have been a few other hints as to how combat works in Starfield. Bethesda studio head Todd Howard says the game draws as much inspiration from indie favorite FTL as it does from old PC classics like MechWarrior. Along with this, eagle-eyed fans noticed an ominous warning hidden in the gameplay demo.

With all of these threats, and the fact that you can be attacked anywhere and anytime in Starfield, you want to make sure you have the best chance of surviving by getting your character’s classes and stats right. Either that, or you can join a religion that constantly makes you jump and fall.
