Among the enemies in Warhammer 40K Darktide are the grizzled veterans of the Empire.

You don’t have much time to get to know your enemies in Warhammer 40K Darktide because, like other Left 4 Dead-inspired co-op games, the goal is to take them down as quickly as possible. But Darktide co-creator Dan Abnett, who is also the author of many popular 40K novels, says the sinister characters emerging from the shadows of Tertium’s nether hive have a history, and a sad one.

There’s a new post from Abnett on the Darktide Steam page that explains the backstory of some of the enemies we’ll be facing when the Warhammer 40K: Darktide release date rolls around in August. Many of them are humans corrupted by Chaos, including a regiment of some of the finest troops in the Imperium, the Sixth Mebian.

Abnett explains that due to the game’s format, he has little time to learn the individual identities of the grizzled Mebian Six veterans. “You may not personally recognize them,” she wrote, “but you will know their types, and a picture of Moebian Six will quickly emerge.”

According to Abnett, the soldiers of the Sixth Regiment closely resemble recruits throughout the Empire. They are called into service at a young age and sent to the far reaches of space to battle alien and astral horrors they never knew existed in their time on Tertium. This is the threat that the citizens of the planet call the “oil slick”.

The experience, he says, is often traumatic, even fatal.

“Some soldiers, of course, serve brilliantly and bravely and stay loyal,” says Abnett. “But others are falling prey to the insidious touch of the oil spill. They face the evil effect of the Warp and it changes them. They become, literally in some cases, the very thing they are fighting against.

The 6th Mebian Division has a variety of troops, and you’ll find some of them in Darktide: melee fighters, flamethrowers, heavy weapons squads, and snipers. “They have everything you need in an armed unit if you want to destroy the world,” says Abnett.
