A venerable mainstay in the long-running JRPG series, Final Fantasy 16 summons like Shiva and Ramu will be controlled directly, and you can fight other “Akons” alongside them. However, producer Naoki Yoshida confirms that while summons can be controlled, your teammates in Final Fantasy 16 won’t be able to control them.
Although Final Fantasy 16’s release date is less than a year away, and that’s not counting the possible additional wait for the PC version, the details are finally starting to sink in. In a new interview with IGN, producer Naoki Yoshida confirms that players will be able to control gameplay and combat, including noise that might disappoint fans of Final Fantasy’s classic party system.
First, the good news is that summons will play a big role in combat in Final Fantasy 16, and can sometimes be controlled in real time. Yoshida says that this “Akon-focused combat is one of the main selling points” of the RPG. “Some will meet Clive as fierce enemies, others will befriend and come to Clive’s aid,” explains Yoshida. – There will also be times when the player controls the Akon in real time, fighting other Akons. The type and scale of the battle is somewhat fluid and changes seamlessly in real time depending on the battle… keeping the excitement as high as possible while maintaining immersion.
Yoshida confirms that the character of Clive will be well accompanied “by one or more companions” in most cases, as in almost all Final Fantasy games. Although they fight alongside you in battles, the player cannot control them directly. “Party members will be controlled by AI so players can focus solely on controlling Clive,” confirms Yoshida.
It’s a shame, but it’s true that it’s not much different from the combat in Final Fantasy 15. How will this affect Final Fantasy 16’s ranking as one of the best Final Fantasy games on PC? We’ll have to wait and see.
