One of the biggest issues with multiplayer gaming on PC seems to be resolved, as cross-play is now available on the Epic Games Store and Steam thanks to new cross-compatibility tools available to developers that allow you to play on different launchers.
For all gamers migrating between Steam and the Epic Games Store, this can be a real headache. While GOG Galaxy added cross-compatibility with the Epic Games Store and Steam long ago, the two largest stores on PC often struggle to co-exist, especially when gamers try to play games available on both launchers, like Dead by. Daylight or Fall Guys and discover that they are incompatible.
seems to be installed finally change as Epic has released a new set of free plug-and-play tools for PC that allow developers to easily implement cross-platform play support between launchers, all designed to “give developers everything they need to connect their game and community across multiple platforms and stores.”
Initial tools allow developers to implement cross-play between games on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with console and even mobile features “coming soon,” according to Epic. Tools include friend list merging, account linking, in-app game invites, and more.
“Crossplay gives all friends the opportunity to get together and make sweet memories interactively,” says Simon Elleys, senior director of online services at Epic. “We are fortunate to be able to drive change in the industry with cross-play tools for all developers, and we believe that bringing friends and communities together will lead the gaming industry to its next growth spurt and the next billion players.”
Just in time for Fall Guys to be released for free on June 21.
