Modder Creates a Gaming Monitor Out of Lego Bricks and Plays Doom on It

Now you can play Doom on a Lego brick thanks to the efforts of a modder and his tiny OLED gaming monitor. The ridiculously small screen was previously only able to display animated lines, but is now (sort of) capable of running one of the best FPS games of all time. It’s the latest in a plethora of platforms and tons of hardware you can find to run your favorite shooter that you probably never thought you’d see.

James Brown, creator of the Lego Brick gaming monitor, shared images of Doom in action on screen via Twitter. However, before dreaming of pairing this screen with a Lego gaming PC, even Brown admits that despite his impressive efforts, the game is “not very playable.”

This is due to a combination of factors, the main one being the characteristics of the panel. The monitor has a resolution of 72×40, less than 3000 pixels, and is limited to monochrome output. Brown says that for Doom to display properly in the panel, the panel applies “adaptive histogram equalization to even out dynamic range, add noise and threshold.”

While not particularly practical, this gaming monitor is certainly a cool creation. Also, we might see an improved version of this Lego labor of love with a higher resolution screen from another Twitter user. barbecue developerso keep an eye on this space.

Despite being almost 30 years old, there is a lot of life in the Doom scene, and the developers recently updated the game with ray-traced graphics. You can even play it in your system BIOS if you’re itching to get rid of that demon-killing itch.
