The Last of Us Part II celebrates two years since release

Today, June 19, 2022, marks two years since the release of The Last of Us Part II. It was a rare case of a project that was very expensive for those times, the creators of which decided not to “go for the fans” and turned the concept of the game into a direction that no one expected (not counting the brutal leaks before the release). The result was a game that some loved and others hated. At the time, our review came up with the following verdict:

“Everything that number one did, number two does better. This is another extremely narrative and emotional pilgrimage with unforgettable characters. At the same time, there was a shift in the technical and artistic treatment of video games. As always, that doesn’t mean The Last of Us: Part II is for everyone – especially if you have a weak stomach and are concerned about the sheer violence. But if you bite into it, you’re in for one of the best games of the generation.”

It’s definitely worth noting that the game’s technical and artistic qualities were also highly praised by competition experts, as we learned from an internal review prepared for Microsoft’s Xbox division and subsequently published somewhat inadvertently during the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple:

“The design and attention to detail in The Last of Us Part II is absolutely top notch in every aspect, and the overall presentation is significantly more advanced than anything other teams have created on consoles or PC. Not every game design can support this level of visual detail, and not every team has the talent or the money to achieve it, but this game sets a new standard for what we could achieve with next generation consoles. The Last of Us Part II is an extremely rare video game: what it achieves in the art of storytelling in video game format outweighs whether everyone “liked” it or “enjoyed” it.

At the end of the year, the game also won an absolutely unprecedented 321 polls for the title of the best game of the year, both from the professional public and from the players themselves. Thus, it became the most awarded game of the year in the history of mankind. We can only hope that (not only thanks to the recent announcement of a remake of the first game for PC) it’s only a matter of time before this PlayStation gem also reaches other platforms and other players can appreciate its qualities.
