You can now play the Lost Port of Quake GBA

The game’s archivists have discovered a long-lost Quake GBA port created by the same janitor who created the legendary “impossible” SNES port of Doom. Also, you can play this version of the classic FPS game yourself.

There are many amazing things about the 1995 Super Nintendo port of Doom, such as the technical wonder of having FPS on a 16-bit console and that Doom would take place in the distant future, in 2022. The coolest fact is that the port was mainly done by a programmer – horny linden.

According to the Forest Illusion archivists, in 2002 Linden put his skills to the test by porting Quake to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance handheld computer. He created a demo to show how Quake could be run on a console, but it didn’t work well, mainly because the public had turned away from the GBA when it was released. This Quake demo was recently rediscovered on a random flash drive in the Linden Vault, and is now available for download from Forest Illusion.

Although from a technical point of view, this demo is not exactly Quake. This is a Quake skin tech demo intended to show how the game will run on GBA hardware – it is fully 3D rendered unlike most FPS games on GBA. However, it does not use any Quake assets, not even music or sound effects. It’s very similar.

Linden apparently reused the engine he was using and created his own original FPS called Cyboid, which you can download from his website. Interestingly, it is very similar to Quake.

As for Quake, in 2021 it received an official remaster and even a horde mode. As the Xbox Bethesda reveal draws closer, it’s entirely possible that a new Quake game will be unveiled. However, it probably won’t be available on GBA.
