Ahead of the big Summer Game Fest announcements, Square Enix casually confirmed Just Cause 5, or at least that a “new title” in the open-world Just Cause franchise is in development, presumably on a regular basis. Developer Avalanche Studios.
Just Cause 4 was released in December 2018 to semi-rave reviews, and we haven’t heard a word about the franchise since, except for the possibility of a Just Cause movie from creator John Wick. More recently, in May, Square Enix confirmed that it would be selling several of its Western studios to Embracer Group, including the creators of Deus Ex and Tomb Raider.
Avalanche Studios, developer of Just Cause and Rage 2, was not involved in this sale because Square Enix does not own them, but Just Cause is owned by the publisher. Now, during the fiscal year investor briefing (thanks, ResetEra), Square Enix is confirming that “the Just Cause franchise will remain our intellectual property” and is also “developing a new game in the franchise.”
We can only assume that Avalanche is working on this new game again, and it’s probably Just Cause 5. According to the job listing, Avalanche is working on a “cutting edge open world AAA game” which could very well be the new Just Cause. . We’ll have to wait and see if this is specifically announced at Summer Game Fest though.
