At the end of April of this year, the free game Space Punks, through the fault of our Polish neighbors Flying Wild Hog, brought us games like Shadow Warrior (2013) and Shadow Warrior 2 (2016).

Diablovka or Borderlands?
Space Punks can best be described as a comic book-style sci-fi devil girl, strongly reminiscent of Borderlands. Definitely don’t expect any story experience, quite the contrary. In Space Punks, all you have to do is mindlessly destroy everything that rushes at you. At your disposal are melee weapons (which you are unlikely to use), ranged weapons (rifles, shotguns, energy weapons, and more) and your character’s skills. At the same time, you can use your environment to some extent, such as explosive barrels or electrifying crystals.
The big plus of the game for me is its simple but addictive gameplay. What I really liked, besides destroying the horde of enemies, is the hack, primitive but at the same time satisfying. For me, this is definitely a better way to “keep” the player at the door than stupidly holding the button. For the best gaming experience, the developers recommend playing with a gamepad, but even with a mouse and keyboard, you will comfortably mow down enemies. None of the inputs will give you any advantage, and therefore it is up to you who you are more accustomed to or comfortable with.
Make sure you pick your punk
If you decide to try Space Punks yourself, then really take care of the first choice of the character you will play as. Unfortunately, you don’t get a chance to try out any of the characters, and the first time you choose, you’re determined to play until you’ve accumulated or bought enough in-game currency with real money. You can then unlock the remaining characters for this.
I fell in love when I watched the trailer for Bob’s character, who bears a striking resemblance to the worm from Men in Black. I’m fine with Bob’s abilities, but his overly robotic voice made me sick of the character. The fact that your character, whoever he is, talks so much doesn’t add much to it! I admit, some announcements are funny and hilarious, but in general they rather spoiled the impression of the game. In my case, even so much so that I first turned them off in the game settings, and eventually turned them off completely.
Multiplayer after tutorial
If you’re going to play with friends, don’t expect to be playing together right away. First, the game will take you through several levels that will serve as a tutorial. This is not well explained to the players, like other things. They just throw you into the city, and then the task and weapons and go kill. Personally, I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t play in a band from the very beginning.
If you are playing without a group, after completing a few of the mentioned solo missions, the game will start trying to pair you up with other solo players. But this is not necessarily positive. In addition to sometimes waiting up to several minutes on the server, you can get someone in your group who has no idea what levels to do, or worse, it’s afk. Unfortunately, there are no tools in the game to communicate with teammates, which can be quite frustrating at times.
After a few hours of playing, I feel like I haven’t progressed very far in the game – I didn’t have a high level, and I didn’t unlock almost anything in the skill tree. This means that you will either have to spend a lot of time in the game in order to make some progress and have enough resources to craft weapons and armor, or you will have to help yourself with microtransactions. At the same time, the crafting system at first glance looks interesting and quite complex.
Finally
As a free to play game, Space Punks is a good distraction worth trying out. It can give you and your party a few hours of fun. What might put you off is the game’s repetitiveness and lack of content – at least for now. Let’s see what other updates will bring in this regard and what the game will look like in the full version.
