Valheim update aims to fix cloud saves and add Maypoles

Valheim’s next update should prevent players from losing progress due to an annoying Steam Cloud save bug. Patch 0.208.5, now available on Viking’s public test branch, adds a workaround and security system to protect your save files, even if you’re playing with multiple Valheim accounts on the same PC. The patch also introduces new festive content for the summer solstice, so start making flower crowns now.

Developer Iron Gate explains that players, especially players who used multiple accounts on the same PC, have been experiencing progress loss issues due to a Steam Cloud save error. To fix this issue, the developers say they are creating several new folders for both cloud and local save files.

As soon as this new patch appears on the main branch, the cloud save files will be stored in the Steam user data folder. Backup files for dedicated servers and PCs with multiple accounts have a new backup file location: a folder named “_local”, which is located next to the old backup file folder. Old save files will remain in this old save folder, but new save files will not be stored there. Iron Gate says that when you now run a previous local save with cloud save enabled, the previous local file will be moved to the cloud and a local save will be created.

As the summer solstice approaches, Iron Gate also adds Maypoles, Wreaths, and new Summer Banner colors to Walheim.

The patch also includes an update to the Unity version that should reduce crashes and tamed animals will now follow you around Haldor’s force field.

You can read the full patch notes on Steam. The patch will no doubt be coming to the main branch soon, but in the meantime, you can try it out first by opening Steam Valheim’s settings, clicking Properties, and selecting Betas. Enter the code ‘dasimadebackups‘ (without quotes) in the field and you can select Public Test Branch from the list of menu options. Once the game is updated, you can try the next update.

As the code suggests, Iron Gate says that while this patch is intended to fix save files, you’ll need to manually back up any existing save files before opting into the beta.
