Many gamers seem tired of over-salted and toxic communities, as users flock to Reddit’s low-sodium forums for helpful and positive discussions on games like Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk 2077, and Battlefield. 2042.
As The Drum noted, the era of “thrifty games” may be approaching, as Reddit users seem to be turning away from the official big game subreddits en masse in favor of “low sodium” versions, i.e. with less salt. For example, while the main Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit has around 927,000 subscribers, the Low Sodium Cyberpunk forum still has 141,000 users.
In terms of growth, r/LowSodiumHalo grew 134 times in the last quarter, while Battlefield 2042 grew 23 times. These areas encourage friendlier, less toxic discussions, with Reddit director of partner research Rob Gage noting that “low-sodium subreddits are 46% less bad than their gaming counterparts.” While the official subreddit is full of similar themes, the low sodium version has it instead.
Furthermore, data from Reddit seems to show that nostalgia is also on the rise, with retro subreddits also showing a growth spurt. For example, the classic gaming forum r/TipofmyJoystick (big name) has seen a 63% increase in users over the last few years. “It’s not just that gamers want an environment that encourages more positivity,” Gage suggests, “but they’re looking for timing, aesthetics, and sounds that return them to a more rewarding gaming experience.” He then adds: “Many look back, not forward.”
In other words, try not to be so salty on Reddit, but if you get tired of those communities, there might be a low-sodium equivalent. Just be careful when talking about the Halo series, you don’t want to push your luck.
