After months of speculation, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is now revealed and confirmed as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and according to the adventure game’s director, it will be “more cinematic” with “brighter” worlds thanks to the next generation. of graphics. technologies like real-time ray tracing and improved transmission times.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the first single-player Star Wars game to receive a sequel since 2010’s The Force Unleashed 2. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was revealed at this week’s Star Wars Celebration, along with a trailer short and beautiful. The trailer (below) and an interview on the official Star Wars website with director Stig Asmussen reveal a few details, including the fact that it’s not all about looks.
When asked how Respawn uses more modern technology to improve Fallen Order, Asmussen first pointed to ray tracing. “Because it happens in real time, we see the changes immediately when we install the light,” he confirms. “It means we have more time to adjust, which means we can rehearse more and get better results that feel more cinematic.” Additionally, the faster SSDs allow the game to “load tons of content very quickly” and make Survivor a streaming game with no load times.
The team also plans to “expand” the game’s worlds and levels to “make them more dynamic than in the past.” The “cutting room floor” has a lot of ideas from the first game Respawn revisits, like “more positions to fight” and “where are we going with the story.”
Regarding this story, Asmussen remains silent. Aside from the return of Cameron Monaghan’s protagonist Cal Kestis and BD-1, the only confirmed character is the sinister Senator of Utapau and the mysterious man in the healing bacta tank. The director confirms that the plot will be “all about survival” – hence the title – and that Cal will have to make connections with “unreliable” characters to stay alive.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be released in 2023 and we should know more later this year. Respawn is currently working on several Star Wars games, including a strategy game from former XCOM developers, and Cal Kestis himself could appear in The Obi-Wan Kenobi Show, which is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
