Will The Quarry be a bad game or are we wrong?

When I first heard that the developers of Until Dawn announced a new game called Career, I was very surprised. Supermassive Games recently embarked on a journey of short horror stories collectively known as The Dark Pictures, and no one expected this little studio to be planning to disrupt its harmonious release curve. But as we’ve seen in all three games released, none of them really did well, and players called for a second “Until Dawn”.

We have already explained why we will never see the continuation of a successful adventure. in the previous videoand if you haven’t seen it, feel free to see it first. However, this time we’ll show you how the studio’s upcoming feelings left us, why we thought The Quarry must have been a bad game since its release, and if the hour-long demonstration changed our minds at all.

What did the quarry get wrong before graduation?

By the way, this is the most popular issue on the Internet related to The Quarry. Unfortunately, you won’t find answers. There are several starting points: the game is being worked on by people different from those who worked on previous titles, or the game is being created so quickly that it cannot support the weight of its ambitions. And it’s not over yet. The second blow, which only strengthened our contradictory impression, was the publisher. The game is out managed by 2K, which isn’t exactly strange, but it’s a very different publisher than Until Dawn publishes, and the same is true of the Dark Pictures anthology. So wasn’t Bandai Namco excited about the new idea, or did the studio just need to release a new game? It’s a bold estimate, but let’s give it a go. in the context of an hour demonstrationin which I happened to play.

The Quarry doesn’t stand out from previous Supermassive Games titles. So you can expect a classic story-driven adventure with multiple solutions, long dialogues, several playable and different characters, and a supernatural starring. Such a description is in “Until Dawn”, an anthology of “Dark Pictures” and “Career”. Basically, this shouldn’t be a problem, and the fact that The Quarry has decided to branch off from the anthology can only be a game. After all, Until Dawn worked with its usual gaming curve, so why not The Quarry. And here we can start with our omen, which we set when we announced the game. So what did The Quarry and the developers do wrong before release?

Looking back, we can say that the last game of the House of Ashes studio came out. in October 2021. Exactly seven days for this fourth part announced anthology titled The Devil in Me. So, we know that the developers need some time to work on the fourth story, which should be released at the end of this year. Months passed, and it was March when the studio unveiled a new announcement: The Quarry. A completely separate game from the series with more ambitious plans and at least double the playing time. It sounded great. What sounded less good was the planned release date: June 10, 2022. Because if we know that the developers were working on House of Ashes and then preparing The Devil in Me, and we know that the game should be released three months after it was announced, where did the developers even take the time to work on the game?

WE CHECKED THE WATCH OF THE WATCH

The demo presented us with a total of seven characters, and six of them were able to move for a while and make decisions about their actions. Each of the characters is already from the sample different location in nature. The characters haven’t been given much space yet, but those few dialogues can give you a clue as to what their behavior will be, and frankly, if you’ve played Until Dawn, you’ll know too. very similar archetypes. The story also works richly with this, waving mostly loving braids that throb with the young band. One of these exits led us into the dark forest that surrounded the camp. Hackett Quarryin which the game is installed. In the forest, the demonstration allowed us to try out QTE or quick events, body movements, decisions made under time pressure and breath holding.

It sounds like the game works with multiple game elements, but the truth is that none of the game mechanics bring anything newsomething that previous games won’t see again. However, I felt a change in gameplay when figure movementwhen the movement system reverts to tighter angles and doesn’t work with the 360-degree camera as in House of Ash, but still gives you a freer hand in where you can look with the character.

On the other hand, the demonstration didn’t give us a chance to look around, as the freer spaces in the space were relatively poor, while the rest were filled. cut scenes with solutions. I can’t tell you practically anything special about them, because you know them very well. Decisions in dialogue mainly affect the relationship of the characters, while decisions in action determine the starting point of the situation. It also affects your progress in QTE and breath holdingwhich replaces the Survive Until Dawn disc when you had to hold your driver tight. Instead, you press a button and release it when you run out of oxygen or it’s safe.

I can honestly tell you that the gameplay, at least, hasn’t changed much. On the contrary, the developers began to work differently with music. The title is not afraid to use loud songs and often songs are sung, which is not found in any of the previous studio games. While it’s a good idea and a lot of inspiration from the Life is Strange series, for a while I wasn’t sure if the music was too jumpy.

Just graphics have come a long way again. The game looks very good, the character models themselves are another small step forward, only the animations seemed a little intimidating at times. But this is something that the final version of the game can still tweak.

DID THE SAMPLE CHANGE OUR OPINION?

From what I have shown you and told you, perhaps you can infer what will be the biggest obstacle to a career. At least at the moment the game does not stand out and positions itself as a step between Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures anthology. I wonder how the game will go? Definitely, and I love playing it. But did my hour in the game convince me to change my mind? Unfortunately no. The title covers a number of unanswered questions and unclear dubious moves.

The story is a bit poorer at this point, although we do appreciate the 80s inspiration and related horror films. We will leave the possibilities open and hope Supermassive Games has something in store for us in the rest. what will change our beliefs. I would be more than happy for that.. How impressed were you, The Quarry, and do you think it will offer us the same entertainment as Until Dawn?
