Is this a game or a movie? It depends, among other things, on how you configure all the “assistants” in the game settings, since you have a choice from short time limits on pressing buttons through long time limits to the automatic successful completion of all these situations without any or intervention. for your part, you can watch similar episodes like a movie. Of course, this will dim the point of this interactive horror a little, which the creators of the British studio Supermassive Games are trying to return to the success of their narrative blockbuster “Until Dawn” and thereby rise a little above the more modest format of their Dark series. Pictures. However, from the two chapters of the game, I’m not sure yet if they will succeed.
One of Career’s problems is that he may be trying too hard to be like Until Dawn. Here, too, a group of teenagers find themselves in a remote place in the middle of nowhere, which at first looks idyllic, but then turns out to be literally deadly. Here, too, we move from provocative games, dates and erotic sparks to suspicious finds in the building and its natural environment. There is also one weapon from the very beginning (which you can decide who gets it). Between chapters, the game again tries to break the fourth wall, where a mysterious character in a mysterious place speaks directly to the player himself. And, unfortunately, during the first three chapters, a creature living in the forest is revealed, strikingly reminiscent of a similar creature from Until Dawn. My only hope is that this is all creative design, and that there will actually be a major twist somewhere in the middle of the game that will turn all that familiar set on its head – sort of like the movie “Cottage in the Mountains”. .
But the qualities of The Quarry are also undeniable: genre clichés remain genre clichés primarily because they work. Here, too, it’s fun to balance relationships and hormones between characters, enjoy a few interactive dates, and then try to be “smart” in a dangerous situation (run or hide, run down the road or try to jump over the gap as a shortcut, etc.) . The dialogue is natural and funny, and the personalities of the individual characters form an amusing mixture. Facial animation is again top notch (many well-known actors such as Lance Henriksen or David Arquette), although with such realistic animation, of course, you will encounter the notorious “uncanny valley”. The environment and the rest of the graphics have not impressed me much yet, but they will do the job of the genre. On my PC (i7-9700F, 16GB DDR4, RTX 2070 Super) the game ran in 4K with fluctuating fluency around 45 fps (for a “more cinematic” experience there is an option to lock 30 in the game menu).
What didn’t sit well with me a little was the hard work of cramming a licensed song into almost every scene. As a result, some scenes are artificially lengthened (so that the song can play well enough) and the whole atmosphere of the film is lost, which would be better supported by a traditional instrumental soundtrack. On the other hand, the selection of songs is usually decent, pleased, for example, “Wise Up”, known from the (brilliant) film “Magnolia”. I can only hope that this over-the-top song serves to set the atmosphere in the early hours of the game, but as things play out, the musical style will move closer to horror classics.
As I mentioned in the introduction, this time around you have really extensive options to customize the difficulty and overall functionality of the game. In addition, after the first playthrough of the game (in the case of the deluxe edition, also on the first playthrough), you will unlock the ability to turn the situation back to a critical point after the death of the character. If your characters die too often, it’s possible that a planned ten hour game turns into a seven hour game (there should be 186 choices at the end of the game!). You can also play the game with multiple players, while local “couch” co-op will be available when the game is released, and online co-op will be available in about a month (July 8). Unfortunately, Czech localization is not available. While some of my experiences with the game are a little confusing, I definitely enjoyed the game and am still looking forward to it. There are never too many good horror films, and this one could be one of them.
The Quarry will release on June 10 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
