Zach Nelson of the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel has long enjoyed destroying things to demonstrate their resilience. This time he took it for granted steam deck. There are virtual queues for Valve handhelds, and those who are waiting for their treasured piece may shed a tear when watching the video. He will see Nelson destroy the steam deck.

With the introduction of the Steam Deck and its packaging, the standard begins. screen scratch test. Nelson uses picks calibrated to Moh’s hardness scale. To his surprise, the top $650 Steam Deck display is more prone to scratches than most other devices. The display has an anti-reflective layer.

It’s time for the knife to showcase durability of buttons and PDA case. The knife blade, of course, scratched the plastic. What pleases is the buttons. The markings (A, B, X and Y) on them are not just a surface print, so they won’t scratch them easily/quickly in normal use.

Then came the beloved lighter flame test. The affected part of the screen turned black. After cooling, however, it returned to normal, which is typical for IPS displays, but still such a test is surprising.

And finally bending test to assess the overall structural integrity of the object. Good news, the Steam Deck survived, Nelson couldn’t bend it permanently, let alone break it.
