Yesterday Sony announced that, starting this week, the PS5 will support VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), a technology that dynamically synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the console’s graphics output, thereby reducing or eliminating visual flaws such as frame rate and screen tearing issues. All this as long as it’s supported by your TV and you’re using an HDMI 2.1 cable. VRR support will be integrated with a new PS5 signature, with individual games that should receive a special update to support the feature natively. Alternatively, you can force it to run from system settings, but with the potential risk of problems.
As we learned from Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Patch 1.007 and Miles Morales’ official notes for PS5, the update also adds a 40fps target for the Loyalty mode, which has also been integrated into Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in the past. You have a 120Hz refresh rate display.
VRR has other advantages if you have a 120Hz display. As Insomniac Games explains on its dedicated support page, “The main effect of adjusting the VRR system will be to slightly increase the dynamic picture resolution targets. However, if your TV also supports frame input. If the 120Hz high speed and 120Hz display mode option is enabled along with VRR, you get a variable and unlimited frame rate. Exceeding the 30 or 60 fps target by 50% of the selected graphics mod or more (depending on the game)”.
This feature will also be integrated for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, one of the games that will support VRR, according to the list shared by Sony.
