Halloween is approaching, and in this era of supernatural horrors and presence, we video game fans often want to test ourselves with a good horror game. We’ve been able to do that in the last few days. supermassive gameswho gave us a trial version of the new episode of The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me.
For the losers, we now come to the fourth installment of the anthological saga and the finale of the first season, following Man of Medan, Little Hope, and House of Ashes. As always, we are faced with a completely new story, independent of the previous ones, a cast of characters and an unpublished setting.
Our experiment, located at an early stage of the story, allowed us to discover the first details about where, who and how the adventures of this new horror game will take place.
Keep reading our article to learn all the details. The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Trial of the Devil In Me.
death hotel
The environment of the Devil in Me is a hotel, but not any: “Death Castle“The building where the HHHolmes murders took place is the heinous US assassin that really existed at the end of the 19th century. Our heroes are a team working on a series dedicated to serial killers, and they now have the opportunity to make the most important part of their careers.
this five heroes They are Charlie, the director and crew leader, presenter Kate, projectionist Jamie, cameraman Mark and sound engineer Erin. According to tradition, the group already has a history, but we will have to define the relationships between them through dialogue choices. In this short demo, for example, it was possible to quickly reach a confrontational stage where Charlie was hated by the whole group or, on the contrary, could create a feeling of friendship.
Our first impression is that it is correct. charlie He may be one of the most interesting characters that other heroes will revolve around. The man is stressed, easily angered, but also passionate about his job and is proud of the young team he has created if we guide him in that direction.
Obviously, choices will not only determine relationships between characters, but also they will lead to death or salvation Our group, who will soon be stranded at the hotel and will have to manage to escape from a mysterious masked figure. The second spies on the protagonists through hidden cameras and uses a series of secret passages to get from one place to another.
In the demo we tested, we also cause the death of one of the characters (We’re not saying which to limit spoilers as much as possible) we’ve seen possible deaths of other heroes, possibly programmed for later in the game, with a single selection and classic premonitions.
It’s impossible to say how deep the subject will be and how much the individual choices will affect the game, but the characters left us one. good first impression. Supermassive Games is also going back a bit to its origins with this episode that focuses on the classics of the genre. slasher, with a typical mystery killer who catches and kills all victims while playing with them. Whether that’s positive or negative, however, comes down to personal taste, especially after House of Ashes brings a slightly more original setting and historical period for the genre.
new mechanic
The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me is a playful sequel to House of Ashes. The free camera is back, the news of the previous episode, but there is some news as well. Each character has unique items which gives it various additional abilities. For example, Charlie has a card that he can use to force the simplest of locks, while Erin can use a microphone to hear distant sounds. Mark can take pictures and use a tripod to reach distant objects.
We know that characters can lose or trade these items, but we didn’t try to do this in the demo. Therefore, we do not know how much freedom we will have, and even in this sense, our choices can greatly affect the progress and survival of the characters. At least, however, these little ones game uniqueness They can help give each character an additional player touch, a difference that is absolutely minimal but noticeable in a narrative adventure.
The demo we played, among other things, had almost no QTE. The team has already stated that there will be fewer instinct options in this episode and more need to think about what to do, but we’ll actually have to see how accurate that will be in the final version.
But through the demo, we were able to confirm another item that has already been said by the developers: The Devil in Me fields will be slightly less linear compared to the past. Let’s be clear, you won’t always find yourself exploring the entire hotel on all its floors and rooms without limitations, but we will be able to look around and move more than a few steps before we shoot a new QTE or a new video. Sometimes we’ll also need to solve little puzzles like finding a key to open a door, moving furniture to create a passage in a room, or finding the code for an electronic lock.
Basically, even if you have no interest in finding all the collectibles, you will need to focus a little more on what surrounds us. We’ll have to see if this is in the final version a little more freedom if it will risk breaking the rhythm of the story or help reinforce the idea of being in a building designed to trap and confuse its guests.
It’s hard to talk more deeply about the Devil Within right now. technical side As always, it’s not very useful as a demo doesn’t represent the final product and even the slightest graphical or audio ambiguity will definitely be fixed with the launch set for November 18, 2022. The dubbing was only in English, so we can’t comment on the Italian voices that we will only hear during the review phase.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me will close the first season of the Supermassive Games anthology series with a mix of past and future, according to our first impressions. On the one hand, we return to the slasher, leaving aside the supernatural touch that has not always been fully convinced in previous episodes. On the other hand, it offers some gameplay innovations that can give the game a different flavor of gameplay, helping it differentiate from its predecessors and lay a foundation for the second season. However, if all this turns into a quality game, we will only be able to learn it in the full version.
