We tried Dragon Ball: The Breakers, the asymmetrical game based on Akira Toriyama’s world.

Let’s face it: If someone had announced a few years ago that in 2022 we would be playing a new game in the Dragon Ball universe that was heavily inspired by Dead By Daylight, we would have just laughed. Because the first thought that comes to mind is this: it wouldn’t make any sense. Characters from the world of Akira Toriyama that brings to life an asymmetrical online multiplayer game? And then Bandai Namco Dragon Ball: The Breakers has been announced. And as often happens, we had to change our minds because not only does the idea make sense, but it works pretty well. Idea, notice, not realization: that’s something else.

We thought we’d reserve an article after you. I tried Dragon Ball: The Breakers. We’ll actually need more time for a worthy review, also considering that the version to be tested comes practically on the day the game is released on PC and all current consoles. But in the meantime, we’ve managed to get away with quite a bit of Cell, Freeza, and company, and we want to tell you about that. Grab the Dragon Radar and follow us.

Lean and necessary… maybe too much

In Dragon Ball: The Breakers, we try to escape in the time machine before the bad guys get their skins.

The first opinion we got about Dragon Ball: The Breakers is positive: the game subtle and necessary, very clear in their purpose and suggested possibilities. A preface to familiarize yourself with this new “idea” dedicated to the Dragon Ball universe; a main area where you can easily access everything there; a menu for online games and you are ready to play. For us, the concept of immediacy is positive; However, it is not too limiting, because then one can easily access, if one wishes, a separate training mode to test all available objects and possibilities, accompanied by bots or real players and novices.

On the other hand, it’s useless to deny that Dragon Ball: The Breakers – at the time of writing – isn’t a bit “too” lean and necessary. All production is basically aunique game mode, always the same: it simply changes the role that can be filled between Survivors and Reapers. And this can also be understood in an asymmetrical online action title. dragon ball; the raiders are only a handful (for now we’ve always met Cell and Freeza); The things to do during the game are always the same until they run out. The hope is that new mods, or any additions that can guarantee minimal variety, are coming soon: otherwise, the fear is that the spiritual energy of Dragon Ball: The Breakers will run out too quickly.

interesting game

The characters of Dragon Ball: The Breakers are many, but they are all the same …

We are not yet ready to go into the details of all the nuances. Gameplay Dragon Ball: The Breakers, but after a lot of games we got a pretty good idea about the same thing. As you can imagine, the operation is very clear: a group of seven players must survive the raider raid. So these poor people must run their time machine and escape from the attacked area before the villain kills them one by one. A series of intermediate stages are required to achieve the goal: rescuing civilians, finding the keys to mobilization, restoring the time machine.

play as forwardhowever, the conditions for success change: he doesn’t have to build anything, he destroys everything he sees, even entire parts of the playing field, albeit quite large. In fact, it seemed to us that the raider always had an advantage over the others available – this is normally in titles like Dead By Daylight, but provided that the enemy to be defeated is not literally omnipotent. Sometimes the survivors’ possessions are literally useless against such a being, and it’s obvious: How can a small energy gun or a trampoline stop Cell with a perfect body? But if the entire production is based on a survival adventure, a balance must be found. Dragon Ball: Breakers doesn’t always seem effective, but we’ll still see.

Suspicious technical sector

In Dragon Ball: Breakers or even Cell becomes a serious threat again in the first stage

Another fundamental observation that unfortunately will not change in the review: questionable technical sector By Dragon Ball: The Breakers. The artistic side is good, the design choices and all the goodness that has been trying to keep the Akira Toriyama world we’ve loved for countless years all good: but in 2022, and on the PlayStation 5, this kind of technical industry is simply unacceptable. Objects on the screen are minimal, the level design is completely questionable, minimal animations and effects. Dragon Ball: The Breakers doesn’t look like a current generation game, in fact it’s not even the previous one, but it’s being sold as such. We certainly don’t want to recommend recycling material from Xenoverse 2 – although we could – but from these perspectives minimal commitment would be desirable.

Accessibility, on the other hand, seems to have improved compared to other games in the Dragon Ball series: Dragon Ball: The Breakers is really understanding with newcomers and tries to acclimatize them by giving them time and space to adapt to what they are. For historical fans accustomed to fighting games or, at any rate, very different action games, we can describe an “unexpected style of play”. That’s fine for now, even for online matchmaking: Even if a match takes additional time to start, it shouldn’t take more than two minutes to “find” a team of random adventurers. But the servers are resisting: It’s probably true that they were never really stressed.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers is undoubtedly a fascinating game in terms of gameplay mechanics and ideas. But for now, it looks very, very confusing to us, somewhat biased in favor of raiders, and completely outdated technically. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun and effective title, even in the long run. We’ll come back to talk about it after we’ve really thoroughly studied its mechanics and reasoned well about its potential.

DOCUMENTS

  • Toriyama’s world is always attractive
  • The basic idea is interesting
DOUBTS
  • It just looks so confusing
