September, which marked the transition from summer cotton t-shirts to the first autumn sweatshirts, has been a favorite of Call of Duty fans who have been on the beta servers of a new episode for a while. Every year the series is to get its first taste a few weeks after its release. One of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which recently closed with several attendance records, allowed us to deepen the many innovations that will mark the gameplay of this version, the protagonist of at least a few design revolutions we have not seen. time to test.
After spending a few hours at the beta company, all the questions that came out of the game’s testing were heavily answered. Interview with Joe Cecot and Geoff SmithInfinity Ward veterans and co-designer of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer game. From the design choices that marked the gameplay of the new episode to some interesting details on its campaign, here’s everything that emerged from our conversation.
The design options of the new Call of Duty
Call of Duty is now a tradition for many players around the world. When it comes to series, a fast and crazy shooter comes to mind, where those with the best reflexes dominate. This is perhaps a transformation process that started with your previous work in 2019, but if we look at this sequel, the new gameplay, the mode with the hostages, the slower and more stagnant pace of the action, everything seems to point to it. You wanted to make Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 a less frenetic and more cerebral shooter, enriched with many tactical elements. Is this the new Infinity Ward trademark?
Geoff Smith: Call of Duty comes out every year and every studio has their own style so it’s not easy, but I think it’s important to work hard to keep the series fresh and original with every release. With Modern Warfare we always have a genre in mind military simulation accessible to everyone, so we took this arcade experience and added some tactical elements, but we were careful to never go over the limit to avoid everything being too simulative and therefore not too funny.
Joe Cecot: Speaking of game speed, really Movement speed Compared to the 2019 episode, the number of players has changed a lot. It’s basically the same, but now the way you move around the map has changed, because in the past there were people sliding or jumping indiscriminately wherever you turned, and I think this is the biggest step we’ve managed to achieve in terms of game speed. We still wanted to peruse specific playlists to please everyone, so while classic mods still provide a fast and crazy experience today, we were interested in trying something different. This is how mods like Knock Out and Prisoner Rescue were born, full of slower experiences and tactical elements.
Speaking of people jumping and sliding, we were surprised to see the disappearance of slide cancellation, a tactic particularly appreciated by Warzone players, where Activision’s battle royal revolves around its entire motion system. What made you choose to uninstall? What were your goals even as you look at the upcoming arrival of Warzone 2.0?
Geoff Smith: It’s interesting that some things are like this slide cancel occur in the game without foreseeing their existence. Let’s say you get killed by something out of your sight in a Call of Duty, which can be very frustrating. So, for example, some area kill streaks, when they target you, shoot at the ground around you before they hit you. So imagine this rectangle, at the bottom is the gun that takes up the entire bottom of the players view. In the past, it often happened that in close corners or other obstacles, opponents would slip under your feet and you were unaware of their presence. We’ve chosen to remove slide cancellation not to deprive the community of a fun feature, but to make everyone’s experience less frustrating.
New Specialization system
One of the hottest topics in the community after the beta of the last few weeks has to do with the new Specializations system, which is now gradually activated throughout the game. What were the development team’s goals when you thought about revolutionizing a system that has remained virtually intact for years?
Geoff Smith: We got the impression that some players once found all three. expertise best suited to them, equipped them, and then, ignoring their abilities, forgot their existence. So our aim was to make the whole process more interesting but also more strategic and to renew something that hadn’t been touched for a very long time.
Joe Cecot: We never thought of adding complexity to an already running system for its own sake. We wanted to revamp the perk system and we liked the idea that players’ favorite Specialty shows up on the screen and says “okay, now I finally have Ghost, I can move around without worrying about UAVs”. It reminds you of your potential on the battlefield and encourages you to take full advantage of it.
Campaign in lighter tones
I know I have to stick with the multiplayer stuff, but I can’t help but ask you two questions about what Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign will be. single player experiences. Unseen in any shooter game, he’s also capable of falling in love with millions of fans, with his ability to stage highly controversial moments like the “No Russian” mission or General Shepherd’s betrayal of Roach and Ghost. The reboot campaign in 2019 went in the same direction, addressing topics like torture and terrorism, so I want to ask you, can we expect something like this again this year?
Geoff Smith: Actually, I don’t think there will be such intense themes in the new campaign. Still a great story, but we game items truly unique that will distinguish each mission. We found some very specific game mechanics and built all levels of the campaign around them.
Joe Cecot: Actually, our main goal was to create a single-player industry that was great fun to play first and foremost. But I think we managed to shape one anyway. complo Even without the gravity that characterizes other Modern Warfare stories, it’s meaningful and compelling, full of twists and moments of reflection. So one of the pre-order bonuses is early access to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign, available a week before launch from October 20.
