Update 02/25/2022 – Steam Deck is available for re-booking on Steam. Additionally, we’ve added pricing for three versions of the handheld console.

After a significant delay due to supply chain issues and component shortages, Valve’s Steam Deck will launch in February. As expected, a portable console dedicated to computer games was released on July 16 and met with huge success. Here’s everything you need to know about it:

What is the Steam Deck release date?

If you’re in a hurry and your reservation is part of the original Steam Deck bundle, you can expect to receive your console in February. New reservations are available on Steam from Friday, February 25 for deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2022.

The handheld game console was originally slated to launch in December. Due to supply chain delays, Valve had to delay its launch. Each pre-order was received by the release window based on the reservation date.

How much does the Steam Deck cost?

On the Steam site, it is now possible to reserve three Steam Deck models in different warehouses, both in volume and in speed. However, keep in mind that a microSD card can be used to expand this space if necessary (so the initial price is not prohibited).

  • 419 eurosYou get a 64GB console (eMMC) and a case;
  • 549 eurosYou get a 256GB console (NVMe SSD) with a custom kit and profile;
  • 679 eurosYou get a 512GB console (NVMe SSD), case, custom profile kit, cup with higher quality anti-reflective treatment, as well as a custom virtual keyboard theme.

What is Steam Deck Autonomy?

According to Valve, the Steam Deck’s battery can last up to eight hours depending on the games you’re playing. Graphically intensive titles logically require more resources, especially at high settings.

For example, we can play Portal 2 On Steam Deck for four hours at 60 frames per second. With a reduction of 30 frames per second, we are heading towards six hours of autonomy, according to Valve.

Is it possible to increase the storage capacity of the Steam Deck?

Yeah. The portable console has a microSD slot to increase its storage capacity. What we don’t know yet is the type of microSD card and its maximum capacity.

Can I switch directly from Steam Deck to PC while playing?

Yeah. Valve added a new feature to Steam before launching the Steam Deck. This feature, called Dynamic Cloud Sync, allows the player to pause the game on the Steam Deck and instantly update where they left off on a PC or laptop. Precision, Dynamic Cloud Sync, is only available for games where developers are embedded.

Is it possible to use an Xbox or PlayStation controller with the Steam Deck?

Yeah. Using a Bluetooth connection, you can use not only gamepads, but also headphones or wireless headphones.

Does Steam Deck support 4K gaming on TV?

Yeah. The Steam Deck can output up to 8K through the USB-C port. Compatible with 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz.

Can I use the Steam Deck as a computer?

of cours. The Steam Deck itself is a laptop with solid hardware configurations behind it. It uses Valve’s Linux-based SteamOS, so if you’re familiar with this operating system, you can use it directly as a computer.

Otherwise, Valve says you can install Windows. However, it is not yet certain that the Windows experience on the Steam Deck will be the same as on a desktop or laptop computer.

Should we crash on the steam deck?

It depends on whether you want to invest your money in a company that does great things with its software but has made questionable decisions with its hardware.

Valve introduced the Steam Engine in 2014. Enthusiasm for a Steam-focused home console was initially high, but waned when it became clear it would only debut on SteamOS, not Windows, which severely limited compatibility.

There was also a Steam Controller that could work with a variety of games, but it took some getting used to and turned players off. Finally, let’s talk about Steam Link, a streaming box that lets you stream PC games to your PC. An interesting product, but which suffers from input lag. Valve eventually replaced it with the Steam Link app, but the experience still isn’t the smoothest.

Although Valve’s experience hasn’t been great, the success of the Nintendo Switch has whetted the appetite of hardware makers. Last year, Dell got a game featuring the Alienware Concept UFO prototype.

Seeing the dazzling success of Steam Deck reservations, we can assume that there is a real demand for portable consoles for playing PC games.
