PS5: Compare the best M.2 SSDs for memory expansion

The PlayStation 5 game console may have 825 GB of memory, more than most computers, but it’s never enough. After installing the system files, there is less than 700 GB of free space left for games. Knowing that if the average size of a game is 25GB it can easily exceed 100GB.

Sony finally allows additional storage

Thankfully, after a few OS upgrades, the PS5’s second internal hard drive bay, which was initially disabled when Sony released a new console, is now available. It is therefore possible to use the M.2 disk (a successive storage disk in mSATA format) to store and play PS5 and PS4 games sold separately.

Supply chain issues such as the PS5 itself, desktop graphics cards, some smartphones, and even cars have also made it difficult to find M.2 drivers, especially among the more popular form factors. The situation seems to be improving and the three drives we tested are now available.

We tested three commercially available M.2 drives specifically for the PS5. Benchmark: Seagate Firecuda 530, Samsung 980 Pro, and Corsair MP600 Pro LPX all have built-in heatsinks. Prices for these drives vary widely, but there is a 2TB version of each. Between 300 and 350 euros.

We tested a game with a small file size for each disc and a game with a large file size. We determined how long it took for the console to transfer game files between the internal PS5 drive and the secondary M.2 drive. We also measured the time it took for files to travel back and forth from the M.2 drive to the internal drive. This is a one-time test, but provides a good basis for comparing these drives.

In all three cases, the switch from the internal drive to the new M.2 drive was faster than the reverse drive, that is, the conversion to the internal drive. The internal drive has a read/write speed of 5500 Mbps. Seagate Firecuda flashes at 7300 Mbps, Samsung can read/write at 7000 Mbps, and Corsair 7100 Mbps reads and writes up to 6800 Mbps.

Based on this, purchases can be made based on stock, price and capacity. You have to understand that there is not enough space in today’s consoles. So sooner or later you will need the extra power.
