Riot Games today unveiled its groundbreaking plans for VALORANT Esports, including three continental leagues that will represent the highest level of competitive play in the 2023 season. The new model is designed to be a long-term partnership with no entry fees for a select number. teams, which will ensure the stability of the fastest growing esports in the world. Riot Games announces news for esports
- Three new continental leagues will host weekly matches between the best teams in the world. In the three continental leagues, composed respectively of teams from America, Europe and Asia, the best players will face each other in head-to-head competitions with spectators (if health and safety conditions during the competition allow). Throughout the year, the top teams from each league qualify for two international Masters tournaments and VALORANT Champions, an event where one team will become the VALORANT World Champion.
- A new competitive mode available to all players directly in the VALORANT client, designed to bring out the best talent around the world. This mode works as an addition to the existing leaderboard, giving players new higher ranked goals.
- The launch of new national leagues that will give new talent more opportunities to qualify for continental leagues. The top teams from Competitive Mode featured in the client will have the opportunity to compete against the top talent from their respective regions in their respective National Leagues.
- Riot Games will break new ground in the competitive esports landscape by waiving entry or entry fees for some organizations, building strong partnerships.
“We want to make VALORANT the most exciting esports today, along with the most ambitious, innovative and well-managed teams in the industry. We have developed our long-term partnership model to grow our partners’ businesses in parallel with the growth of VALORANT Esports,” said Whalen Rozell, Head of Esports at Riot Games.
“We want to build successful long-term partnerships, and to do this, we will exempt certain organizations from any application or participation fees. The goal is for our partners to be able to invest their resources in supporting their professionals and grow their fan base by creating quality content for fans.”
Throughout 2022, Riot Games intends to conduct a selective application process to determine the best long-term partnerships to help build VALORANT into the best esports first-person shooter in the world.
Eligible teams will receive financial support from Riot Games in the form of an annual grant and an exclusive opportunity to partner with exclusive in-game products and activities. Partner teams will also be able to distribute branded esports content, allowing VALORANT’s current 15 million monthly players to show their support while watching and playing.
“Together, all of these elements will help create a competitive ecosystem that will propel VALORANT into a new phase of growth,” said John Needham, president of esports at Riot Games.
“We want to create the highest level of competition with exciting matches, new events to keep viewers interested live and exciting experiences for millions of online fans. We will use everything we’ve learned in LoL esports over the past 10 years to create an ecosystem that will make VALORANT the next great esport for generations.”
In 2017, Riot Games became the first game publisher to enter into an ongoing partnership with League of Legends Esports (LoL Esports). This business model created a formal partnership between the teams and Riot Games, allowing everyone to invest in achieving a shared long-term vision.
Since 2017, this model has been adopted by leagues in North America, Europe, China, Latin America, Korea, Brazil, Turkey and the entire esports industry. With this initiative, players have been able to earn higher salaries and have a more reliable support system, and teams have been able to make more plans for the future.
